Bokashi Starter for Composting

Starting Bokashi Composting for my garden and chickens.

I looked up a recipe online for the Kobashi starter and created my first starter batch.

  • 1.5 TB EM-1 – ordered this
  • 3 lb Flake Material – Used Organic Coarse Wheat Bran
  • 1.5 TB Molassas
  • 3 cups water
  • Container for mixing
  • Plastic bag – Used 2 Gallon zip lock baggie

Dissolve the molasses and EM-1 in the water. Pour the dry flake into the mixing container. Add 2/3 of the water mixture and mix it together. Use your hands. Squeeze a handful together. if it sticks together without dripping it is perfect – if it crumbles like dust then add more of the water mixture till it will just hold together when you squeeze a handful

Put the dampened flakes into the plastic bag. Compress the bag and seal. Put in a dark place for two weeks then open bag and spread out thinly on table or containers to dry.

Store in airtight container to use for the composting.
